How to Arrange Garden Flowers at Home: Pansies, Hellebores & a Favourite Bowl

You don't need an enormous bunch of flowers — or even a traditional vase — to create something beautiful at home.

Sometimes the loveliest arrangements come from wandering around your own garden, snipping a handful of seasonal flowers and arranging them in a bowl you already love.

At Harakeke Florist in Christchurch, we're always inspired by what's growing around us. In this simple arrangement, we've used pansies and hellebores, a favourite bowl and a flower frog to create something loose, delicate and garden-inspired.

And it's surprisingly easy to recreate at home.
Start with what you have in the garden
Before buying anything, take a look outside.
At this time of year in Christchurch, even a small garden can have beautiful little treasures hiding in it. Hellebores are wonderful for arranging, and pansies bring incredible colour and personality.

You don't need dozens of stems.
Pick a few flowers in different heights and shapes. A little foliage can be useful too, but don't feel you need to fill every space. Part of the beauty of this style of arrangement is allowing individual flowers to be seen.
Use your favourite bowl.Forget the traditional flower vase.
Look through your cupboards for a bowl, ceramic vessel or little dish that you love. Something you might normally use for serving food can become a beautiful vessel for flowers.
Using a low bowl also creates a completely different style of arrangement — one that looks particularly lovely on a coffee table, dining table or kitchen bench.

The secret: a flower frog
A flower frog is one of our favourite floristry tools for arrangements like this.
It sits inside the bowl and holds individual stems exactly where you want them. This allows you to create space between the flowers rather than having them all fall together in the centre of the vessel.
Fill your bowl with water, secure your flower frog and then begin adding your stems one at a time.
Don't rush.
Turn the bowl as you work and look at the arrangement from different angles. Let some stems sit taller and allow others to fall naturally towards the edge.
There doesn't need to be perfect symmetry.
Let the flowers do their thing
This is probably the most important part.
Don't try too hard to make every flower sit perfectly.
Pansies have their own little faces and personalities. Hellebores naturally nod and curve. That's exactly what makes them beautiful.
Work with the way each flower naturally grows rather than trying to force it into position.
The finished arrangement should feel as though a little piece of the garden has simply found its way inside.
Beautiful flowers don't have to be complicated
Floristry can look intimidating, but some of our favourite arrangements are incredibly simple.
A favourite bowl.
A flower frog.
A few stems from the garden.
And ten quiet minutes arranging them.
That's really all you need.
At Harakeke Florist Christchurch, seasonal flowers and garden-inspired floristry are at the heart of what we do. We love showing that flowers don't always need to be grand or complicated to make a room feel beautiful.
So next time you spot a few hellebores, pansies or interesting stems growing in your garden, bring them inside.
You might be surprised by what you can create.
